Planet Jupiter has 80 moons. Ganymede, the largest moon, is actually larger than the planet Mercury.
Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa are believed to harbor subsurface water oceans while Io may have a subsurface magma ocean.
Jupiter's shepherd moons are Adrastea and Metis (Main Ring), Amalthea (Amalthea Ring) and Thebe (Thebe Ring).

Jupiter moons can be classified into various groups whereby all moons in a group have similar orbits and often share a common origin. The major groups include the Amalthea group, Main (Galilean) group, Himalia group, Carme group, Ananke group, and Pasiphae group. The following table lists the group a moon belongs to where applicable.
* Size = 1 is the the largest ** Distance = 1 is the closest in orbit
Provisional moons are named according to the year and order in which they were discovered. Once more data from these moons are confirmed, they will be assigned permanent "friendly" names.
